Gulf Coast Western CEO Matthew Fleeger From Medical Waste to Oil Empire

Matthew Fleeger’s path to leading Gulf Coast Western is anything but conventional. Before taking the reins of his father’s Dallas-based oil and gas company, he built and sold a healthcare business, co-founded a chain of tanning salons, and developed a reputation as a skilled deal-maker in industries with little overlap to energy exploration.

Fleeger graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in finance and marketing. From 1986 to 1993, he worked for several Texas-based companies, including the firm his father had built. In 1993, he launched MedSolutions Inc., a company focused on treating, disposing of, and transporting medical waste from healthcare facilities. Within less than a decade and a half, MedSolutions became one of the top healthcare waste management companies in the country. In 2007, Fleeger negotiated its sale to Stericycle for roughly $59 million.

Bringing Business Discipline to Oil and Gas

The sale of MedSolutions freed Fleeger to return to the family business with a fresh perspective. His experience in corporate structuring, general partnerships, and acquisition made him well-suited to lead Gulf Coast Western through a period of expansion. He also played a meaningful role in founding Palm Beach Tan and Mystic Tan, which grew into two of the largest indoor and spray tanning operators in the United States. These ventures further refined his understanding of brand-building and customer relationships.

At Gulf Coast Western, Fleeger brought the same focus on transparency and operational discipline that had defined his earlier ventures. The company now holds a five-star rating from the Better Business Bureau, a distinction few oil and gas firms can claim. Fleeger’s approach centers on keeping investors and partners continuously informed, addressing issues quickly, and maintaining a culture of integrity throughout the organization.

A Record of Growth

Under Fleeger’s leadership, Gulf Coast Western has grown through acquisitions, joint ventures, and the use of advanced extraction technologies like horizontal drilling and seismic surveys. The company now operates across Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. Its expansion into new territories has been guided by stringent criteria for evaluating properties with genuine growth potential. Fleeger’s varied career has ultimately proven to be an asset at Gulf Coast Western, where business acumen and energy expertise now work in tandem. Visit this page for more information.
