JP Morgan’s Justin Nelson Sees Untapped Strength in Neurodiversity

Some of the most capable analysts a bank could hire may never make it past the first interview. That is the concern Justin Nelson has raised about how financial firms recruit people on the autism spectrum.

Nelson serves as Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut. His team is responsible for more than $15 billion in assets, and he has given careful thought to why talented neurodiverse candidates are so often overlooked.

Strengths That Go Unseen

Nelson describes a trade-off that many hiring managers miss. People who struggle with conversation and social connection frequently excel elsewhere. “They can be extremely creative and have amazing computational skills which far exceed the norm,” he notes.

Precision, focus, and comfort with numbers are prized throughout wealth management and financial analysis. A recruitment process that leans heavily on charm and quick verbal rapport can filter out exactly the people who would shine in those roles.

Changing the Employer Mindset

The responsibility, in his view, belongs to companies. “Employers really need to change how they think about engaging with these people,” the JP Morgan managing director says. He adds that the move from school to a first job is often the toughest stage, because interviews put neurodiverse applicants at a disadvantage.

After hiring, Justin Nelson JP Morgan favors clear structure. Breaking projects into defined tasks and explaining where each one fits helps these employees deliver consistent, exact work. Managers who set out the rules clearly, he says, often end up with some of their strongest team members.

Justin Nelson also volunteers with Adelphi University’s Bridges Program and Broad Futures, a charity that educates employers and helps them choose neurodiverse candidates. For a JP Morgan leader managing billions in client assets, the case is simple: firms that adjust their approach gain access to people with rare abilities.
